Description

Bhel puri is a popular Indian savory street food snack made using puffed rice (murmura), paapdi, roasted peanuts, sev, boiled potatoes, onions, tomatoes, sweet-tangy chutneys, and spice powders. It is a quick, easy-to-make snack, slightly sweet, spicy, and tangy snack. Here, I’m sharing Mumbai’s most famous Bhel puri Chaat recipe that is sour, tangy, crispy, sweet, salty, and crunchy.

Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 cups puffed rice (murmura)
  • 56 paapdi (crunchy salty wafers)
  • 1 tablespoon roasted peanuts
  • ½ cup sev (crunchy thin noodles) made from gram flour
  • ½ cup onions
  • ½ cup boiled potatoes
  • ½ cup tomatoes
  • 1 green chilli
  • 2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves
  • ½ tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons tamarind chutney
  • 2 teaspoons green coriander chutney
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon chaat masala

Instructions

  • In a pan, dry roast the puffed rice on low heat if they are not crisp. Then cool them at room temperature.
  • In a large bowl add boiled potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and chopped green chilli.
  • Add 5-6 pieces of namkeen papdi, roasted peanuts, and sev.
  • Add the roasted puffed rice, red chilli powder, chaat masala powder, and salt to taste.
  • Add tamarind chutney (imli ki chutney) and green coriander chutney along with a dash of fresh lemon juice and mix all the ingredients well.
  • Garnish it with sev and chopped coriander leaves before serving
  • Bhel puri is ready to serve.

Notes

  • Roast the puffed rice a little bit till they become crisp and then cool it down completely.
  • Keep all the ingredients ready before assembling everything.
  • Serve bhel puri as soon as you assemble it, else it will become soft and soggy.
  • According to your taste preference, adjust the spice powders and salt.
  • If you don’t have chutneys, you may also use tomato ketchup or prepare a dry version by adding paapdi, roasted peanuts, and sev.
