Mohanthal is a traditional Indian sweet and considered one of the most favorite sweet of Lord Krishna in Hindu mythology. As a prasad, this sweet offered to Hindu God and Godesses. The word mohan relates to Lord Krishna whereas Thal relates to mainly sweet dish or prasad or bhog plate. This sweet fudge is popularly known as Mohanthal, but also called Mohanthar. It is very popular sweet in Gujarat, Rajasthan and among all over India.

This recipe is very close to my heart. When I first tried this Mohanthal, I fall in love with this sweet. I often prepare this sweet dish “Mohanthal” during festivals like Diwali and Holi. It is prepared using simple ingredients such as gram flour (coarse besan), ghee(clarified butter), mawa (khoya) sugar, water and chopped nuts. This tasty and healthy sweet dish ready in only 25 minutes with its grainy and coarse texture. It can be store at room temperature in an airtight container for around 10-12 days. You need a little practice to perfect this recipe.

Description

Mohanthal is a traditional sweet prepared during the festive season like Diwali, Holi using very simple ingredients such as gram flour ( coarse besan), ghee (clarified butter), mawa (khoya),  sugar, chopped nuts and water. This melt-in-the-mouth sweet is very rich in texture and taste.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups gram flour (besan)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup mawa/ khoya
  • 2 tablespoons chopped dry fruits (cashew, almond, pistachio)
  • 1 cup ghee
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  • First, sieve the gram flour using sieve.
  • Now in a heavy bottomed pan, heat ghee and then add gram flour.
  • Roast it on low flame until it turns golden brown in colour.
  • When ghee starts releasing from besan, now add mawa (khoya) and continue stirring for few more minutes.

For sugar syrup

  • In a saucepan, add water and sugar. Get it boil to make 2-3 strands consistency (taar or string).
  • Transfer the sugar syrup over roasted gram flour mixture. Stir continuously till the sugar syrup combines well with the mixture.
  • When the mixture become slightly thick or turns sticky, transfer the mixture to the ghee greased plate. Spread it with the help of using a spatula.
  • Sprinkle chopped dry fruits by gently pressing them down and let it rest for 3 hours to completely set.
  • When it is completely set, cut it into pieces of desired shape.
  • The delicious sweet ‘Mohanthal’ is ready to be served.

Notes

  • Ghee enhance the flavor and texture of this sweet Mohanthal.
  • You can add dry fruits of your choice. Additionally, you can also dry roast the nuts before adding them.
  • Make sure the sugar syrup have 2-3 string consistency, else the Mohanthal will not set completely.
  • You can store it in an air-tight container and can be refrigerated for 2 weeks.
