Potato Bravas Recipe

Potato Bravas is one of the most popular Spanish tapas recipe, made with fried potatoes and flavored chutney. You can make this simple recipe at home for breakfast or as a side dish. It is served in bars throughout Spain. This dish was invented at a time in Madrid called Las Braves, although there are many who hold different beliefs. Potato Bravas is an incredibly simple and inexpensive dish, but everyone has their own way of making it. You will find little variation in the size and consistency of the potato and the sauce. Bravas sauce should be slightly spicy – Bravas, meaning “fierce” or “adventurous” in Spanish.

Spanish Potato Bravas have two main ingredients: potatoes and sauces.

First potatoes are cut into pieces and deep fried in olive oil. The sauce is usually served directly on top the potato before serving. Brava sauce is bright red and should slightly spicy. These Potato Bravas are the perfect starter for any meal or you can also serve them as a side dish, these will definitely be a hit.

Potato Bravas

Ingredients

  • 4 medium potatoes boiled, peeled and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons Extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic chopped
  • 3 medium tomatoes grated
  • Salt to taste
  • Paprika to taste
  • Wine salt a pinch
  • Oil to deep fry

Instructions

  1. Peel and chop the potatoes into pieces.
  2. Heat oil in a large pan on medium heat.
  3. Add potatoes to the pan and deep fry until crisp and golden.
  4. Transfer potatoes on tissue paper to remove excess oil.
  5. Sprinkle a pinch wine salt on fried potatoes.
  6. In a non-stick pan, heat 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, add chopped onion and garlic and fry for 1-2 minutes. Add grated tomatoes and continue to fry for 1-2 minutes.
  7. Add salt and paprika to the onion-tomato sauce. Mix well.
  8. Add some water and cook till the tomatoes are soft.
  9. Cool the onion-tomato mixture and grind it until smooth paste.
  10. Add the onion tomato sauce over the fried potatoes.
  11. Serve hot.
