Here, I’m sharing how to make this namkeen at home.

About this Recipe

Makhana is also known as fox nuts or lotus seeds, Euryale Ferox, Gorgon nut, etc. It is a gluten-free seed that comes from a plant named Euryale Ferox which grows in water. The plant’s white seeds are edible.

Makhana is considered to be a good source of protein, fiber, calcium, and iron. It is widely used in religious events like pooja or havan as a prasad.

This extremely healthy, and light snack can be eaten raw, powdered, or roasted during vrat or upvas on Navratri or any time of the day with a cup of chai or coffee especially perfect for the evenings.

Makhana is also perfect to lose weight. It immediately satisfies our hunger pangs because many of us end up feeling hungry in between meals and tend to eat junk food, but this tasty makhana namkeen helps you to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Ingredients

This namkeen is very simple and easy, made by following ingredients.

Ghee gives this namkeen a more delectable flavor when you roast the makhana in ghee. But for a vegan version, you can replace ghee with oil. You can easily find makhana at many Indian grocery stores or online.

Nuts – Here, I have used almonds, cashews, raisins, dried coconut slices, and peanuts, but you can also use other nuts like walnuts or pistachios.

Spices: to flavor the namkeen, I have used dried mango powder, black pepper powder, and salt to taste.

Others: I have used a few curry leaves to give this namkeen aromatic flavor.

Serving Suggestions

You can serve this makhana namkeen in between your meals or in the evenings with tea or coffee. In India, makhana is perfect to be taken during vrat or upwas (fasting).

This healthy snack is a travel-friendly option. It is one of the best handy snacks for a picnic and your kid’s lunch box.

Roasted Makhana is nutritious by itself, but to make it even more wholesome, I have added various nuts.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fox nuts or lotus seeds (Phool makhana)
  • 12 tablespoons ghee (Clarified butter)
  • 2 tablespoons almonds
  • 2 tablespoons cashew nuts
  • 2 tablespoons raisins
  • 2 tablespoons dried coconut slices
  • 2 tablespoons roasted peanuts
  • Few curry leaves
  • Rock salt (saindha namak) to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper powder
  • ¼ teaspoon dried mango powder
  • ¼ teaspoon sugar optional

Instructions

  • In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon ghee on medium flame.
  • Once hot, add the makhanas and roast them with stirring constantly for 5-6 minutes on medium to low flame till they become crunchy and slightly brown.
  • Transfer it to a bowl.
  • In the same pan, add another tablespoon of ghee.
  • Add almonds, cashews, and curry leaves. Roast them until they become crisp and aromatic with stirring constantly.
  • Transfer them too into the same bowl of makhana.
  • In the same pan, add thinly dried coconut slices and peanuts with stirring continuously for a few minutes until they change light brown in color and crisp.
  • Transfer to the same bowl.
  • Add raisins to it.
  • Add rock salt as per your taste, black pepper, dried mango powder, and sugar.
  • Mix everything well.
  • Toss well, so that the flavors are well coated to the makhana and nuts.
  • Let it cool down completely.
  • Once the mixture cools down, store it in an airtight container.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

  • Ghee gives a delectable flavor for roasting the makhana (fox nuts).
  • Do not roast the makhana and dry nuts on high flame. This may quickly burn them. Always roast on medium to low flame to get perfect crunchy nuts.
  • As per your choice you can feel free to skip or increase or decrease the number of nuts (dry fruits).
  • Use normal salt, if you not making it for fasting.
  • Additionally, you can make spicy by adding chilli powder, chaat masala, peri-peri powder, etc.
