Description

Masala pyaj or Laccha onion salad recipe is a very popular North Indian side dish made with raw onion rings mixed with spices. It goes perfect with any meal or tandoori appetizer that can be made within 10 minutes, It spicy tangy and crunchy at the same time which adds extra flavour to any meal.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 large onions, peeled
  • 2 tablespoons kashmiri red chilli powder 
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black salt
  • 1½ tablespoons chaat Masala 
  • 2 teaspoons coriander powder 
  • ½ teaspoon garam masala
  • Few Ice cubes
  • 500 ml chilled water 
  • Green chilli chopped to taste
  • Lemon juice to taste
  • 2 tablespoon fresh coriander, chopped

Instructions

  • Take 5 large onions and slice them around ½ cm thick into roundels and separate the rings.
  • Now, transfer them in a bowl filled with chilled water and ice cubes.
  • Soak and rest them in water for 15 mins.
  • Meanwhile, mix all dry spices- red chilli powder, black salt, salt, chaat masala, coriander powder & garam masala in a bowl. Mix them together well.
  • Then drain off the water from the soaked onions.
  • Transfer the onion rings in a sieve for a few mins. 
  • Now sprinkle the dry masala over it. 
  • Add chopped green chillies & chopped coriander to taste, squeeze some lemon juice and toss them together without breaking onion rings.
  • It’s ready to plate.
  • Serve it immediately.

Notes

  • Always use fresh large red onions to get a crunchy texture in every bite.
  • Soaking onion rings in chilled water helps to reduce the spiciness of onion. Also, it adds extra crunch to the onion. 
  • Make sure the spices are coated well with each onion ring.
  • It is better to toss everything well to avoid breaking onion rings.
  • Adjust the amount of spices as per your taste preference.
  • This dhaba style onion salad tastes best when served immediately.
