Description

These cheesy potato balls are easy to make and also kid’s friendly snack item that is made with potato, cheese, veggies, and a few aromatic spices mixture and cooked in an appam pan using a little bit of oil. These cheesy potato balls are crispy from the outside and cheesy from the inside. If you are a cheese lover like me, then you should try this recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large size potato, boiled and mashed
  • ½ cup carrot, grated
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, grated or any kind of your choice
  • ½ teaspoon red chilli flakes
  • ½ teaspoon dried herbs
  • ¾ teaspoon pepper powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

How to make

  • Wash and boil the potato and peel off the skin.
  • In a large bowl, add boiled potato. Mash it nicely until smooth.
  • Next, add the grated carrots along with spices like pepper powder, chilli flakes, dried herbs, garlic paste, salt to taste, and a little bit of oil to knead the mixture.
  • Mix all the ingredients well and keep them aside.
  • Apply little oil to your palm.
  • Take a small portion of the potato mixture and shape it into a ball.
  • Gently flatten it to form a thin disc.
  • Then, take about 2 teaspoons of grated cheese and keep it in the center of the mashed potato disc.
  • Gently fold the edges and make small walnut size balls.
  • Repeat the same process with the remaining mixture.
  • Place the Appam pan on heat.
  • Check, if the pan is well heated by drizzling some water. Once the water sizzled, pour 3-4 drops of oil in each mold of the pan and place all the balls one by one.
  • Reduce the heat to medium.
  • Sprinkle few drops of oil over each ball.
  • Cook the potato balls at medium flame and fry until golden and crisp.
  • Flip them over and fry the other side too.
  • Make sure that both sides are crisp.
  • Transfer it onto a plate lined with absorbent paper.
  • Serve with tomato ketchup or coriander chutney and with tea or coffee.

Notes

  • Make sure, the potato is mashed well. You can use a potato masher to mash the potato until smooth.
  • Feel free to use flavorings as per your choice. Instead of dried herbs, you can use coriander, cilantro leaves or any greens.
  • If you like, you can also deep fry and bake them into the oven.
  • I have used an Appam pan to fry cheese balls with less oil.
  • You can pick cheddar, pizza cheese, or any other kind of stringy cheese to stuff inside the cheese balls.
