Momos, originating from Tibet is a hugely popular street food in the country, largely in North-India.

You may find so many varieties of momos at the stalls on street. This popular street food made with different kind of stuffing like vegetables, paneer, tofu, soya and as non-veg meat (chicken, lamb) etc.

Today I am sharing Veg momos recipe with using vegetables like carrot, onion, cabbage and capsicum. Additionally, you can add any vegetable of your choice such as mushrooms, green beans, cooked potatoes, baby corn, bean sprouts etc. These vegetable must be chopped finely. I feel easy to get it done quickly using food processor to finely chop the veggies.

The veg stuffing is somehow mild in taste that’s why it is best to serve with red coloured spicy and watery momos chutney on side.

To make them at home is very easy only except the shaping part. To give them a shape is not hard to make, but it takes time to shape them with perfection. It requires some practice. You can make it in few different shapes like round pleated (potli shape), half moon shape. I find the potli shape is quicker to make .

If you want to take shortcut for the outer layer of the dough, you can use wonton wrappers or spring roll wrappers. Cut them into four portions.

Here I have steam cooked the veg momos which is the traditional cooking method and also healthy. With steaming method, the stuffing stays moist. But you will find like fried, tandoori versions at stalls or restaurants.

Check out my momos chutney and other chinese recipes.

Follow the guidelines to help you make it easily and perfectly.

Instructions

To Prepare Stuffing

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a pan over medium- high heat and stir fry ginger, garlic for few seconds.
  2. Further add chopped vegetables and stir fry continuously for 3-4 minutes.
  3. Then add salt and black pepper powder.  .
  4. Now add green part of spring onion along with soy sauce and stir fry again for 2 minutes. This Stuffing mixture is ready.
  5. Turn off the flame and allow it to cool the stuffing.

To make Dough

  1. Combined well all-purpose flour (maida) and salt into a bowl, knead it to make smooth yet stiff dough by adding less water at a time.
  2. Now cover the dough and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Then divide the dough into 20 equal portions and make smooth balls and flatten them.
  4. Dust with some maida and start to roll using a rolling pin.
  5. Now roll to almost medium thin circle. Around 4 – 5 inch in diameter. Make sure you roll from sides and keep the centre slightly thick.
  6. Place a tablespoon of stuffing in the center and start pleating the edges slowly and gather everything.
  7. Press in middle and seal the momos forming a bundle.
  8. Once all done, heat a glassful of water in a steamer pan and bring it to a simmer on medium heat.
  9. Then grease the steamer tray with little oil and arrange the shaped momos on it without touching each other.
  10. Steam momos for 10-12 minutes or till the outer layer looks shiny, transparent and by touch it doesn’t feel sticky.
  11. Remove from the steamer.
  12. Finally, veg momos recipe is ready to enjoy with momos chutney.
