Thai papaya salad, also called som tum or som tam, is a tasty and spicy side dish. Thai Veg Papaya Salad is a recipe that uses neither onion nor garlic and it is an easy and quick salad. To prepare this recipe, you will basically require a food processor or mortar pestle.
This papaya salad is made from green papaya. It is a form of orange papaya, it is not ripe, it is raw. Comparatively, green papaya is crisp (but not juicy) and has a very mild flavor, more light than cucumbers.

- 1 Raw papaya , thinly chopped
- 1 cup Tomato , sliced
- 1 cup Red Yellow and Green Bell Peppers (Capsicum) , thinly chopped
- 1/2 cup Roasted Peanuts (Moongphali) , or roasted cashew
- 5 Green beans (French Beans)
- 1 Green Chilli , sliced, seeds removed (to taste)
- 2 tablespoon Soy sauce
- 2 tablespoon Cooking oil
- 3 tablespoon Lemon juice
- 2 tablespoon Brown Sugar (Demerara Sugar)
- 1/4 cup Basil leaves
Instructions
How to prepare Veg Thai Papaya Salad
- First, cut the ends of the green papaya. Using a vegetable peeler, peel off the outer skin. Split the papaya into two portions. Then cut the papaya carefully into thin slices.
- Second, add green chili, soya sauce, lime juice, oil and brown sugar in a food processor or chopper and turn into a paste
- Now cut the beans into pieces and churn them lightly in a chopper or processor.
- In a large salad bowl, pour the thinly sliced papaya, and other vegetables like tomatoes, bell peppers and beans, toss them lightly.
- Finally, add the nuts and toss again.
- As per requirement adjust spices and taste.
- To garnish, place some basil leaves on top of the salad.
