These Chapati cutlets are flavourful, easy to prepare, and versatile, making them a popular choice for a quick snack or even a light meal. They offer a delightful blend of textures and flavors and can be a hit at parties, picnics, or as an afternoon tea-time snack.

If suddenly guests come to your house in the evening and you are  not able to understand what to feed them, then leftover chapati cutlets are a great and tasty way to serve your guests. Here’s a more detailed description of chapati cutlets along with serving suggestions, tips and variations.

What is Chapati

Chapati, also known as roti or phulka in different regions of India, is a traditional unleavened Indian flatbread. It is a staple food in many parts of India and is widely consumed across South Asia. Chapati is made from whole wheat flour, water, and a pinch of salt.

Serving Suggestions:

You can enjoy these leftover chapati cutlets as a quick snack or appetizer.

You can serve them with tomato sauce, green chutney or tamarind chutney for extra flavour.

You can also pair them with a fresh salad for a light meal.

Variations:

To make it more flavorful, stuff the cutlets with a filling of paneer (Indian cottage cheese), or grated cheese before frying.

Additionally you can experiment with different spices like cumin, turmeric, or curry powder for unique flavors.

You can also add vegetables like beans or bell peppers to the mixture for added flavor and nutrition.

For a healthier option, you can bake the cutlets in the oven or fry them in an air-fryer.

Leftover Ideas:

Use leftover chapati cutlets in sandwiches or wraps for a quick lunch.

Crumble them into a tomato-based gravy or curry for a delightful twist on the traditional roti sabzi.

So, these leftover roti cutlets are a fantastic way to avoid food wastage while creating a tasty snack or side dish. These are versatile, easy to make, and a great way to enjoy the flavors of Indian spices and herbs.

Enjoy your homemade leftover chapati cutlets!

Description

Leftover Roti Cutlets are savoury patties made by using leftover Indian flatbreads (rotis) mixed with mashed potatoes, vegetables, spices, and then shallow-fried until crispy and golden brown. Here is a delicious way to use leftover rotis in no time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3–4 chapati
  • 1 cup boiled and mashed potatoes
  • ¼ cup grated carrot
  • ¼ cup green peas
  • ¼ cup onions, finely chopped
  • 2 green chillies, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons coriander leaves, finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon red chilli powder
  • ½ teaspoon carom seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • 1–2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons suji/rawa (for mixture) + 1 tablespoons (for coating)
  • Oil for shallow frying

Instructions

  • Start by breaking the leftover chapatis into small pieces and grind them to get a grainy mixture.
  • Transfer the mixture into a mixing bowl.
  • Add boiled mashed potatoes, onions, carrots, green peas, green chillies, coriander leaves, salt, red chilli, carom seeds, suji/rawa, and lemon juice into the grounded roti.
  • Mix everything well using your hands and knead it to form like dough and set aside for 10 minutes.
  • After 10 minutes, apply a little oil in your palm and take a portion of the mixture and shape it into round or oval patties or any desired shape as you like.
  • Heat some oil in a shallow pan or skillet over medium heat.
  • Once the oil is hot, carefully place the cutlets in the pan.
  • Fry and flip them over a couple of times till they are golden brown and crispy on both sides.
  • This usually takes about 3-4 minutes on each side.
  • Remove the cutlets from the pan and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • Serve the leftover chapati cutlets hot with your favourite chutney, ketchup, green chutney, or with tea.

Notes

  • If you have leftover rotis, ensure they are at room temperature. If they are cold, you can warm them up in a microwave or on a griddle.
  • The ratio of rotis to potatoes can vary depending on the quantity you have, but a common ratio is roughly 2:1 (rotis to potatoes).
  • Adjust the spice level according to your preference.
  • Make sure that the mixture is well combined and the roti and potato blend together evenly.
  • You can make the patties as big or small as you like.
  • Alternatively, you can bake the cutlets in the oven instead of frying.
  • Additionally, you can add vegetables like beans, bell peppers, and paneer to the mixture to make it more nutritious,.
